Today, on steve jobs birthday of all days. Apple released a new line up of macbook pros and also stopped selling mobile me in stores.
The new Macbook Pros are not very different in appearence, still sporting the slick unibody construction and beautiful glossy screen. Look under the hood though and it is a totally different story. The 13 inch MBP now sports a 2.0 Ghz core i5 dual core processor standard with 4GB of ram and a 320GB HDD. The 15″ and 17″ MBPs also receive respective spec bumps that can be viewed here.
One of the new biggest features is the addition of a ThunderBolt port, which is a variation of Intel’s LightPeak technology. The two main differences between LightPeak and ThunderBolt are that ThunderBolt is using copper instead of fiber optics so it can power devices instead of require external power adapters. The second difference is that ThunderBolt takes on the shape of Apple’s minidisplay port so they will be able to charge you for all of the external adapters you require.
Another addition made to the new MBPs that has been overlooked is the upgrade of the SDHC slot to a SDXC slot. SDXC cards can theoretically put up to 2TB on an SD sized form factor.
Lastly, in the slew of MBP announcements, there was a lose. Apple will cease to sell Mobile Me retail boxes in the store. Many say that this is in lieu of them releasing a new, free Mobile Me service. As much as I look forward to this, I wonder what will happen for people who still have months left over of paid Mobile Me time.
