Android Unite! – Ice Cream Sandwich OS

The next big update to the Android platform, Ice Cream Sandwich, is set to hit out devices in October/November according to Google chairman Eric Schmidt.

Ice Cream Sandwich will unite the current gingerbread mobile OS with the tablet version of Android honeycomb, allowing one OS to be able to run on both. The move to unite both platforms of Android obviously came after Google becoming heavily criticized over how fragmented the Operating System as become with users running all different versions.

To overcome this I believe that uniting the OS and lifting the minimum requirements a much higher standard so all of the latest Android Handsets/tablets will be able to run the Applications.

Now enough of Google’s food themed code names as it only makes us hungry mmm and keep tuned.

Another PSP? wtf…

Most people attending the SCEE Press Conference yesterday at gamescom were expecting some exciting new announcement regarding the upcoming new handheld the PS Vita but instead were surprised when Sony announced another addition to the current PSP family dubbed as the PSP E-1000.

The PSP E-1000 is a budget PSP that has shockingly has NO wi-fi,  what were Sony thinking? All we can assume is that Sony are aiming this at children whose parents want a cheap(ish) handheld without them having to worry about them going on the internet or downloading anything.

The PSP E-1000 is made from the same lovely matte Charcoal black finish as seen on the Slim PlayStation 3. The E-1000 will of course be able to play all UMD titles currently available aslong side as the new essentials UMD range which will be launched alongside the console, you will also be able to download titles using the PC Software MediaGo.

To be honest in my opinion I really see this as a pointless launch especially with the stated price of £99.99 when you can pick up the PSP 3000 model with Wi-Fi for around the same price and less if you look in the right place…

Review: Monster Turbine Pro Copper In-Ear Speakers.

I was never one for the term “in-ear speakers”. To me it just sounded like marketing gimmick, similar to “Retina Display”. Something that just makes a product sounds a whole lot better than it is, a way to justify a price tag. Then I found the Monster Turbine Pros. With a $212 price tag on amazon, they are a hard pill to swallow, but with just one listen I am sure you will be willing to lay down the cash.

Spotify conversion rates are on the rise…

Plenty of opportunities for Spotify to rejoice over the past month. One of the bearers of good news comes from a fortnight in which over 1.4 million users in America signed up, including 175,000 paying for the premium service.

Needless to say, this is also good news for the music industry, because MOG, Rdio and other streaming services of this nature have been really struggling to sustain momentum this year.

Spotify, as a business model, is all about the “conversion rates.” The major record labels want to see highest possible conversions to the premium service from the free option as is possible. Across the pond in Europe, Spotify has even more promising signs, with rates of 15% compared to USA’s 12.5%.

I wish they’d just focus on this though, rather than keep interrupting my playlist with audible advertisements.

Vimeo Launch ‘Vimeo Pro’ for Professional Video Hosting

A long time in the making, Vimeo have finally launched their counterpart, ‘Vimeo Pro’ yesterday. The accounts claim to be the most accessible and affordible *professional* video-hosting solutions aimed at the UK’s enterpreneurs and can be checked out here.

Vimeo Pro costs $199 US per year and you get 50GB of video hosting and 250,000 plays.

“Until now, quality video hosting has been expensive, confusing, and extremely difficult for a small business owner to understand. Small businesses have fallen between the cracks of free video services and massive enterprise video solutions,” said Dae Mellencamp, Vimeo’s General Manager. “Vimeo PRO resolves the contradiction that best-of-breed video quality and hosting can also be easy and affordable.”

The Amazing Spiderman…

In a turn to try and reboot the Spiderman franchise from the downfall of Spiderman 3, the next film will not be a follow up to the previous trilogy.

Instead will be a completely new start from scratch with new actors, with Andrew Garfield taking the role of Peter Parker who famously appeared in the recent film about Facebook, The Social Network…

uTorrent Paid Version is on its Way

As an avid user of their freeware, I was interested to see that uTorrent will soon be releasing a paid version of their service. With over 100 million active users worldwide, this launch is really going to wake the market up.

uTorrent Plus is its name and it will offer the ability to convert videos and transfer files to external devices. Thus, it will replace the services of lots of programs (e.g. DVDVideoSoft) that filled the “after-downloading” needs – you will now be able to move videos downloaded via uTorrent onto your iPhone, PS3, iPad, Apple TV, etc.

No date has been announced yet, but it is expected to launch later this year in an invite only beta.
